About

CTV Two history, coverage, features

CTV 2 is a Canadian television system owned and operated by Bell Media. The network comprises multiple television stations that operate across Canada (both terrestrial TV stations and regional cable TV channels). It was first launched on September 1, 1995, under the name “NewNet”, before being rebranded as “A-Channel” in August 2005, “A” in August 2008, “CTV Two” in August 2011, and finally, “CTV 2” in 2018 as a result of several ownership changes.

CTV 2, upon its founding as “NewNet” in 1995, was owned by CHUM Limited. By 2007, the network was acquired by CTVglobemedia, which was then later acquired by Bell Media in 2011. In 2011, CTV 2’s owners, Bell Media, opted to relaunch and rebrand the channel from “A” to “CTV Two” to better align with their acquisition of other CTV properties.

CTV 2, which is a free-to-air network, offers all broadcasts in English. Its coverage of football competitions includes the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America tournament, the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and the 2015, 2019, and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups. It also serves as a secondary option to broadcast content alongside CTV and TSN.

For instance, during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, CTV 2 provided coverage of late-night and weekend matches that conflicted with other key prime-time programming events on TSN. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the network broadcasted several notable matches, including Canada’s first World Cup game since 1986.
