Updates on Pepe’s head injury explains that Real Madrid must now plan to fill the defender’s void ahead of Thursday’s Spanish Super Cup first leg match in Barcelona.
Real Madrid produced a very physical performance to beat Barcelona 2-1 the last time both teams met at the Camp Nou. In the Spanish Supercopa 2012, Los Blancos will have to emulate this achievement without the help of unfit defender Pepe.

This piece of team news increases Jose Mourinho’s concerns ahead of the clash. After dropping two points against Valencia in La Liga, the Real Madrid coach has to rally his squad which Cristiano Ronaldo described as “not yet in the best shape physically”.

Pepe was involved in a bad clash with goalkeeper Iker Casillas during last weekend’s draw at home to Valencia.

He has therefore been ruled out ahead of Thursday’s Spanish Super Cup match against Barcelona at the Camp Nou. However, it is understood that Pepe will not be sidelined for too long.

“Normally, with a head injury, we have the player under observation for 24 hours,” club doctor Carlos Diez explained in an encounter with Real Madrid’s official website.

“More importantly, we brought him to the hospital where we could carry out the necessary tests, all of which have come out okay. He spent Sunday night under observation and everything is very good.

“We have decided, with the help of Real Madrid’s medical services, that the player could be discharged from the hospital without any problem.”

Still, Pepe will not take part in the Spanish Supercopa come August 23.
