Following Real Madrid’s loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, Mourinho blasted the crowned champions and praised his team’s efforts. Mou did so in controversial fashion.
The Portuguese manager downplayed the importance of the title and referred to the Catalans as a “small team”. Spanish magazine Marca quoted the Real Madrid coach as saying:

“This is a tiny little title, but we are not happy to not have won it. However, we played both matches very well, we were fantastic.”

Joe Mourinho then found an excuse to justify his side’s behavior during the last stages of the game as Los Blancos got involved in an ugly confrontation against eventual Supercopa de España champions Barcelona on the touchline. He continued:

“From the first minute of the second half, and I will not criticize it, because there are people who do this, the ball-boys hid themselves. That happens with tiny little teams when they are facing difficulties.”

Cameras showed him stick his finger into the eye of Barcelona’s assistant coach during the brawl. However, Mourinho escaped without punishment as Özil, Marcelo and David Villa each received their matching orders.

The former Inter manager also claimed that Los Blancos had made great progress against Barca in recent ties. He added that Real Madrid had finally matched the Blaugrana’s level with their attacking display in the two-legged Spanish Super Cup.

But with the aggregate score line stating otherwise, the Catalans mocked Mourinho’s attitude in reply. An unimpressed Gerard Pique told reporters after Wednesday night’s encounter:

“Someone has to take action here. Mourinho is destroying Spanish football. They talk a lot about the Catalans, but the problem is in Madrid. I think he is crossing the line and the limit, and he needs to be stopped.”

Coach Pep Guardiola added his voice to the complaints against the controversial Mou by advising him to behave as a professional. Rounding up Barca’s retorts, midfield maestro Xavi talked about the brawl in general and Barca’s authority over Florentino Perez’s improved Real Madrid squad. The Catalan role model declared:

“Unfortunately this is the image of Madrid. The cameras speak for themselves. You can be aggressive or over enthusiastic but Marcelo went in to hurt Cesc.

“It's good that today justice has been done. We're not in the best physical condition but we have still beaten to Real Madrid, who had thoroughly prepared for the Supercopa.”
