Arsenal suffer blow ahead of Liverpool clash

Arsenal suffer injury blow ahead of Liverpool clash as star midfielder picks up knock during international duty

March 24, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Gunners could be without their playmaker when they welcome Liverpool to Anfield after the international break.

Arsenal have been handed a massive scare ahead of their Premier League clash with Liverpool after talisman Martin Odeegard picked up an injury while on international duty with Norway. The Gunners will take on the Reds after the international break but could be without the on-loan Real Madrid midfielder as a result of his latest mishap.

The 22-year-old playmaker captained his country for the first time in Wednesday night's UEFA World Cup qualifying Group G encounter with Gibraltar but could not last the whole duration of the game. Prior to the first half break, the player appeared to have rolled his ankle and initially tried to carry on despite being visibly in pain. He, however, could not and signalled to the bench to be substituted off.

In his stead, Norway brought on Patrick Berg and went ahead to beat Gibraltar 3-0 with the goals coming from Alexander Sorloth, Kristian Thorstvedt and Jonas Svensson to secure their first three points in the campaign. For Odeegard, his withdrawal presents a huge concern for Arsenal considering how instrumental he has been since joining the club during the winter transfer window.

Reports suggest that the Gunners exploring the possibility of making his transfer a permanent one. Relatively, the player has also refused to rule out the prospect of extending his stay beyond the current short term deal. Irregardless, his absence will be felt when Mikel Arteta's side host Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on April 3 before they take on Slavia Prague in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.
