Preview: Leipzig vs Dortmund

Currently two points behind league leaders Bayern, Leipzig will be hoping to keep up the pressure on the reigning champs as they host Borussia Dormtund for matchday 15 of the 2020/2021 Bundesliga season. Given that Bayern will be in action a day before on Friday, it's possible that die Roten Bullen could find themselves five points back even before they take to the pitch, and more important, Leverkusen could potentially have pulled even should they win their earlier match against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Leipzig come into this tie unbeaten in their last five league fixtures, with wins in three of those, and will be looking to take advantage of a Dortmund side who have alternated between a win and a loss in their last quartet of games. Lucien Favre was sacked last year following a humiliating 5-1 home defeat to newly promoted Stuttgart, and now Edin Terzic has been brought in as die Schwarzgelben look to steer the wobbly ship. The visitors kicked off 2021 with a confidence boosting 2-0 victory over Wolfsburg, and although they concluded 2020 with a loss in the league, the one silver lining was 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko becoming the youngest ever goalscorer in Bundesliga history with his equalizing effort in the 60th minute.

Moukoko's nascent career has been regrettably dogged by controversy, with some claiming that he is actually older than his age due to his impressive skills, speed, and strength that have allowed him to comfortably be able to hold his own against players much older than he is. Suffice it to say, despite having his age verified, there will always be those who have something to say, and regardless, many Dortmund fans are excited to have yet another new, promising talent within their ranks. Unfortunately, the young starlet suffered a knee injury, and although he's returned to training, it remains to be seen if he will be risked for this upcoming match.

Despite their inconsistent form, Dortmund have a strong track record against Leipzig. They are unbeaten in their last five meetings with the ambitious club, who were only founded in 2009, and have picked up wins in four of those clashes. That being said, Leipizig have really improved defensively this year, and have conceded a measly nine goals in 14 games. To put that in perspective, Bayern have conceded 21 and Dortmund have conceded 18; more significant, Julian Naglesmann's men have managed to keep a clean sheet in their last four consecutive matches.

Team news: Leipzig vs Dortmund

Leipzig: Manager Julian Naglesmann will be dealing with quite a long injury list ahead of this tie. Justin Kluivert (calf), Ibrahima Konate (ankle), Konrad Laimer (knee), Christopher Nkunku (ankle), Dominik Szoboszlai (abductor), and Benjamin Henrichs (knee) are all definite absentees, while both Nordi Mukiele (knock) and Kevin Kampl (leg) are doubts and will have to be evaluated prior to the game on Saturday.

Dortmund: The visitors have now welcomed Erling Haaland back after a long-term injury lay-off, and he will again definitely feature in the starting XI. However, both Thorgan Hazard (muscular) and Marcel Schmelzer (knee) are out, while youngster Youssoufa Moukoko is still recovering from a knee injury. Fellow teenage starlet Jude Bellingham recently suffered a knock and also may end up missing the trip to take on Leipzig on Saturday if he can't recover in time.
