Barça flop shares truth on Ronaldinho-Deco deals

Former Barça flop shares 'truth' behind Ronaldinho and Deco's transfer away from the club

June 26, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
Aliaksandr Hleb did not hold back when being asked about his short stint at Camp Nou, managing to drop a few bombs in a recent interview.

There has always been a mystery surrounding Ronaldinho's departure from Barcelona just before Pep Guardiola, and today, that mystery found its way into the light thanks to an unexpected source.

Ronaldinho and Deco were two of the most talented players in the world when Pep Guardiola took over as Blaugrana boss. Unfortunately, neither one of them was able to play under his command, since Guardiola asked for both of these players to be transferred.

In an interview with a Belarussian TV show called "Skameika osnovij", former Barcelona flop and current BATE Borisov player Aliaksandr Hleb revealed the reasons why Barcelona chose to follow Guardiola's advice regarding both players. According to Hleb, Barcelona execs decided to let both players leave since they could have been a bad influence to a young Lionel Messi.

"Do you know why Barcelona sold Ronaldinho and Deco back in 2008? Because they were afraid that Messi would follow them in their erratic behavior, which included arriving drunk to train," Hleb stated.

Hleb's words should be taken with caution, as he signed weeks after both players left the club. Deco left Los Blaugranas to join Chelsea in June, while Ronaldinho joined AC Milan in the earlier days of July 2008. Hleb signed on July 16, 2008, in what he refers to as the worst decision in his career.

Further into the interview, Hleb revealed that he wanted to join Bayern rather than Los Blaugranas during that summer transfer window, but he ended up doing so to satisfy his manager's wishes.

"I didn't want to play for Barcelona. I wanted to keep playing for Arsenal or to join Bayern, but my agent insisted after a phone call with Pep Guardiola. In the end, things did not work out," Hleb said.

Hleb played 36 games in all comps for Barcelona after signing a four-year-deal with the Catalan club. He spent three out of those four seasons on loan, before finally putting an end to his commitment by joining Russian Premier League side Samara.
