Both the USWNT and Mexico will be battling for top spot in Group A when they lock horns on Monday, February 26th.

Top spot in Group A will be up for grabs as the USWNT and Mexico face off on matchday three of the group stages at this year's CONCACF W Gold Cup. Team USA, who are serving as hosts of the inaugural event, have already qualified for the knockout rounds following comfortable wins over the Dominican Republic (5-0) and Argentina (4-0).

With a spot in the next venture already secured, interim boss Twila Kilgore may decide to mix up the squad for this upcoming match. Meanwhile, Mexico currently sit in second spot on four points, and are looking quite likely to be joining the USWNT in the knockout rounds. La Tri started their tournament off with a frustrating scoreless draw against Argentina, where they outshot their opponents by 16 to three but were unable to break down Argentina's stubborn defense.

Pedro Sanchez's team, however, were in absolute control in their second match as they cruised to an 8-0 win over the Dominican Republic on matchday two. That result does put Mexico in good stead to earn an automatic ticket to the next stage, regardless of what happens in the Argentina vs. Dominican Republic match, which will be taking place earlier on Monday. Should Argentina win that match, La Albiceleste could qualify as one of the best third-placed teams depending on how Paraguay and Puerto Rico fare in their respective ties against El Salvador and Colombia.

Mexico, however, are facing an uphill battle against history. To date, La Tri have won just once against the USWNT in 42 prior meetings, and have lost every single one of their last 16. They are also taking on a team who are unbeaten in their last 80 home matches against CONCACAF sides dating back to December 2000, and have looked largely in control so far at this year's CONCACAF W Gold Cup. Notably, Team USA have never lost in California in their last 55 matches (W51 D4), but could this record come crashing down in this match? The USWNT have shown that they are not without reproach, and Mexico just may have it within them to cause what would be a huge upset and pip the USWNT to top spot in Group A.
