The Spanish giant left Italy embarrassed and upset, and understandably so. This was yet another disappointing last-eight exit for a side that has not won the title since 2015.
And now the Blaugrana players feel they have gifted the title to their bitter rival, Real Madrid. This was a feeling echoed on the flight back to Barcelona.
According to one source on that same flight, as per Sport, many on board felt that the club’s exit at the hands of Roma has cleared the path for Los Blancos’ success. "We have delivered the Champions League to Real Madrid," was said more than once, but no names were mentioned in the article.
“Anger” and “sadness” was visible among the players. They remain convinced that the Serie A side was an opponent they should have eliminated.
Instead, their season was ended. While the Copa del Rey and La Liga titles are within reach, Valverde’s side won’t forget this failure anytime soon.
Meanwhile, Zidane's men are preparing for their second-leg encounter with Juventus. This game also appears to be over thanks to Real Madrid's 3-0 win in Turin, but Cristiano and Co. nonetheless still have work to do to confirm their semi-final spot.
