In the build-up to Manchester United’s Europa League final encounter with Ajax, residents in the city were shocked by an attack during an Ariana Grande concert.
A bomb went off in the Manchester Arena in a terror attack that sadly left 22 dead and 59 injured. Nonetheless, UEFA announced that the Europa League final will go ahead as planned.
The clash between Manchester United and Ajax, set to be held on Wednesday in Stockholm, will not be delayed. However, there will be heightened security amid fears of another attack in the wake of Monday night’s occurrence.

European football’s governing first gave their condolences to the family of the deceased before assuring fans over the security. UEFA revealed in an official statement that “no specific intelligence” points to attacks on the Europa League finale, but security will be tight nonetheless.
UEFA wrote: “UEFA is shocked by last night's attack in Manchester. Our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those affected.
“There is currently no specific intelligence which might suggest that any of the UEFA Europa League final activities in Stockholm may be the target of attacks.
“UEFA has been closely working with local authorities and the Swedish FA for many months and the terrorist risk had been taken into account since the very beginning of the project. Furthermore, a number of additional security measures were implemented following the attacks in Stockholm last April.”
Fans are urged to arrive as early as possible by UEFA as “detailed checks” will be made at the entrances, with delays in accessing the stadium expected. Just under 10,000 tickets were handed to the Premier League giants for the final, but more fans are tipped to make the trip to Sweden.
Mourinho’s men are scheduled to travel to Stockholm on Tuesday afternoon, a day prior to kick-off.
