The 2016 UEFA Euro winner was heavily linked to a move away from Sporting Lisbon, with clubs such as Chelsea and West Ham eager to sign him.

The race to sign Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario has come to an end.

According to Portuguese newspaper Record and Italian football website football-italia.com,  Inter Milan will sign the Portuguese ace after paying Sporting Lisbon the sum of €40M .

The talented midfielder was one of the transfer targets for many English Premier League teams, but today's reports give Inter Milan the upper hand.

Joao Mario will become Inter's first signing in the Suning era, weeks after the team was sold to their new Chinese owners. He will join Ever Banega as the team's second signing this summer, although the Argentinean had signed his contract with the outgoing administration and arrived on a free transfer.

Joao Mario played 45 games in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon, scoring seven goals in the process. His fine form earned him a spot in Portugal's UEFA Euro 2016 squad, where he helped Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. to reach the final and eventually win the tournament.
