The Dutch manager assigned Giggs the position back in 2014, yet throughout the few years of working with each other, their relationship is short of the spark needed for such a high-profile team.
The Red Devils secured a Champions League spot in last year's 2014/2015 campaign, finishing fourth in the Premier League table, but this season the management pair were not able to get their men to reach the top four, ending in the fifth spot.
Speaking to the sports radio station Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Ian Holloway feels the Manchester United boss and his assistant do not suit each other.
"I don’t actually know what he [Giggs] has got - I feel for him, [Giggs] has had a taste of it, with Fergie - he would have been the natural successor to it all."
"They don’t look like they get on, let’s be honest. There’s no chemistry between the two of them is there? We don’t know that, but I’m saying it."
"Let’s look at the way he played – you won’t get a better winger than him will you? It’s not going to be floating his boat."
Regarding Friday's reports of Manchester United's Ed Woodward accepting the need for change, he is seemingly set to ask the Dutch coach to move into a director role, as the Red Devils go under the leadership of incoming manager Jose Mourinho.
"Is this just something to put extra pressure on Van Gaal? It is unfair because he doesn’t seem that popular with the press does he."
"I can’t see Van Gaal and Mourinho – yeah they might have worked together before, but I can’t see any one of them putting up with that."
