Romania have one mission in mind ahead of Euro 2016: improving their record in 2002.

Romania head to the Euro 2016 hoping to surpass their performance in 2000 when they reached the quarter-finals of the tournament after beating England 3-2. They then lost to Italy in the quarter-final of the tournament, but went back home with their heads raised high with pride.

Coach Anghel lordanescu’s men face hosts France on June 10th for the opening match of the tournament. A positive result from this fixture will give them the much needed confidence to face other opponents in Group A, and make it to the knock-out stages.

Recent form

Since June 2015, the Romanians have played a total of eight international matches. Out of the eight, they have won two and drawn six. Four of the six draws were goalless, something that should give lordanescu a reason to work on his strike force ahead of this UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. As of May 2016, Romania occupy the 19th position in the world in the FIFA Ranking. They face Spain, Congo, Ukraine and Georgia for international friendlies before taking on France in the opening match of the Euros.

Manager’s profile

The Romanian national football team is headed by Anghel lordanescu, who is a retired Romanian footballer. He retired from football in 2007 to enter politics then took over as the manager of Romania in October 2014. Since then, he has overseen 11 games, won five, drawn six, and lost none. This was his third stint with the national team.

His first stint was in 1993 as Cornel Dinu’s replacement and steered the team to the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup. He also took them to the Euro 1996 and 1998 World Cup, and resigned after losing to Croatia in the latter competition which was staged in France.

His second stint with the national team was in 2002 when he replaced Gheorghe Hagi, but failed to qualify for Euro 2004, which was his main objective. He was then sacked in 2006 after a poor performance against Armenia.
