With the race for the 2015/16 Liga BBVA title a three-way neck-to-neck dog fight between Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Real Madrid, Los Rojiblancos’ chances of lifting the league crown were handed a huge blow with Diego Simeone receiving a three-match ban.
With only three games remaining to the current campaign, this means Atletico have lost their passionate Argentine boss for the remainder of the season, as they fight to beat the Blaugrana to the title.
Cholo was slapped with this punishment after being sent to the stands by match official Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz due to a second ball entering the pitch during a counter attack from Malaga in Saturday’s clash, which Griezmann and Co. won 1-0.
Simeone proclaimed his innocence after the game, as video showed that the ball boy was the culprit; nonetheless, RFEF regulations state that the manager is responsible for what happens around his technical area.
With the Champions League semi-finalists level on points with Barca but behind on goal difference, Simeone will miss the club’s remaining fixtures against Rayo Vallecano, Levante and Celta Vigo.
This comes as Madrid’s other heavyweights prepare to host Bayern Munich in the last 4 of Europe’s top-tier club competition, with the Vicente Calderon the venue for the 1st leg tie.
