However, the Brazilian superstar’s contract at Barcelona was recently leaked, showing that the 24-year-old earns a humble £77,000 per week.
Whistle blowing website Football Leaks made the Selecao captain’s Blaugrana deal public, with British tabloid The Sun picking up on this revelation, pointing out that Neymar makes just over £4m per year, three times less than Wayne Rooney’s over £13m-per-year wage.
The former Santos ace’s salary means he earns less than 10 English Premier League stars, earning less than half of what the likes of Raheem Sterling (£180,000), Cesc Fabregas (£170,000), Mesut Ozil (£190,000), and even John Terry (£160,000) make per week.
However, although the Barcelona attacker makes peanuts in comparison to other players across the globe, he stands to earn mega-money through bonus packages.
Neymar will make an extra £851,000 should he feature for 45 minutes for at least 60% of the Catalan giants’ games and will earn £511,000 should Luis Enrique’s boys book a Champions League spot.
The Brazilian will receive an extra £681,000 should Barca win Europe’s top-tier club competition – he’ll also receive the same amount should he collect a Copa del Rey medal – and will pocket £511,000 for winning La Liga.
Should the Blaugrana win another treble with Neymar playing half of the club’s matches in the competitions, he’ll be awarded with a £1,363,000 bonus.
The South American sensation is up for a contract renewal, meaning a pay rise can easily be expected for the 24-year-old.
