Last year it was the Real Madrid show at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. This time around, though, Barcelona dominated the affair.
Seen as a curtain raiser to the upcoming Ballon d’OR gala being held in January, the 2015 Globe Soccer Awards commenced, with Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi staling the Player of the Year prize.
Scoring 58 goals in all competitions last season, the Argentine attacker led the Blaugrana to the 2014-15 Liga BBVA title, with his 43 Spanish Primera Division goals, and the Champions League, thanks to his 10 strikes.
The Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup were also secured under the guidance of the 28-year-old, meriting him a spot in the 2015 Ballon d’Or three-man shortlist.
Last year, Cristiano Ronaldo lifted the top prize at the Globe Soccer Award en route to winning the Ballon d’Or, a feat which many tip Leo to follow.
“It's very nice to receive these awards, but I always say that the team makes it possible,' said a humble Messi, as he collected yet another individual award in his illustrious career. “It's been an extraordinary year.”
The Catalan giants were also big winners at the award show, clinching the Best Club 2015 prize, the Best Media Attraction in Football award, with Best President 2015 going to Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Other winners were Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo, legendary midfielders who now ply their trade in Major League Soccer, winning the Player Career Award.
Super Agent Jorge Mendes was crowned Agent of the Year, whilst Belgian national team boss Marc Wilmots won Best Coach 2015.
Best Academy 2015 went to Portuguese giants Benfica, Yasir Al-Shahrani of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal won Best GCC Player 2015, whilst Ravshan Irmatov was named Referee of the Year.
