The DFB Pokal always gives a fighting chance for every team to end Bayern Munich's domination, and this time, Borussia Dortmund will try to prove that once more when they start their run for the title against Bundesliga II side Paderborn, in what should be an entertaining game to watch at Signal Iduna Park.
Thomas Tuchel's side has performed brilliantly during the ongoing Bundesliga season, even if they were no match for Bayern Munich a few weeks ago. With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in excellent form, and with players such as Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus showing why they were considered among the best footballers in recent years, the yellow-and-black side will try to prove the critics right against a lower division team. Even though Tuchel's defense has not been able to keep a clean sheet in their last five competitive games, the team's strikers have made sure things go their way, racking up sixteen goals so far. If they can replicate that against Paderborn, the visitors could very well be in for a tough evening.
On the other side of the pitch, Paderborn will try to perform an upset after being relegated from the Bundesliga just a few months back. Stefan Effenberg's side, currently ranked 13th after a sloppy start, will rely on Lukas Kruse's experience to try and defeat their top-flight opponents, even if they haven't been glowing recently. The former midfielder's side has an ongoing two-game winning streak, scoring four goals and keeping a couple of clean sheets in the process.
In recent years, these teams have met four times, including last year's Bundesliga matches. Borussia Dortmund has the upper hand when playing against Paderborn, winning three of those games and drawing one. During their recent meetings, Dortmund has outscored Paderborn 10-3, giving fans a hint of how things could turn out if Tuchel's side enjoys a good day.
