Bayer Leverkusen are coming into the second leg of their clash against Atletico with a slender 1-0 lead, although, they are worthy of such a lead. Very few teams dare to look Atletico's players in the eye and approach the game as physically as the Spanish side. Yet, Atletico suffered more fouls in Germany. When they were previously in the last eight (2001-02), the Round of 16 did not exist.
As is to be expected with the finalists of last season and of 1974, Koke and Diego Godin, both hugely important figures, are suspended. Saul Niguez is injured while Guilerme Siqueira is doubtful. For Leverkusen, Robbie Kruse is out injured. The Australian might not be available for the remainder of the season. Lars Bender and Tin Jedvaj, both as important to Leverkusen as Koke and Godin to Atletico, are doubtful. Both will be needed to see this tie through.
The 'other' team from Madrid are currently not in great form. They have scored one goal in their past four matches, drawing three and losing to Leverkusen. Also, the red card count in matches involving Atletico is continuing to increase. On the other hand, the win over Atletico was a catalyst for Leverkusen. They have won their past five, including the match against Atletico. They are coming into this one on the back of a 4-0 win over VfB Stuttgart.
