Iceland took on Latvia in the Euro 2016 qualifiers and returned home with three points. Glyfi Sigurdsson, their talisman, struck in the 67th minute and Aron Gunnarsson scored in the 77th minute to give them a 0-2 lead. A last minute goal from Rurik Gisalson added gloss to the result. In truth though, Iceland might not have come away with all three points had Latvia's Artjoms Rudnevs not collected a second yellow card ten minutes after half time. An early shower for him broke Latvia's resistance.
Likewise, the Netherlands were helped by a red card. They have been struggling in their qualifiers, unlike previous Dutch teams of the previous decade. Having lost their first match, they had to beat Kazakhstan. After 17 minutes, when Renat Abdulin struck though, the Dutch seemed a bit lost.
They came back on level terms through none other than Schalke's Klaas Jan Huntelaar in the 62nd minute. Two minutes later, Baurzhan Dzolchiev was sent off. However, the Dutch could not find a way past the stubborn Kazakhs until Ibrahim Afellay scored eight minutes before the end of normal time. A Robin Van Persie penalty in the final minutes secured the three points for Guus Hiddink's side.
Despite their efforts, the Dutch are only third in their group behind Iceland and Czech Republic. The two top sides have won both their fixtures so far. The Dutch can of course take a spot in the top two by beating Iceland. However, this match is not a foregone conclusion by any means. As the qualifiers have shown so far, there are plenty of shocks in store this time.
