Zaragoza and Levante may be facing problems off the pitch because of a match held three years ago. A Spanish prosecutor summoned 20 unrevealed players regarding the possible match-fixing of the two teams back in 2011.
Zaragoza needed a victory to keep playing in La Liga, while Levante had avoided relegation a few weeks earlier. Los Maños won the match 2-1 with goals by Atletico Madrid's captain Gabi. Two years later, Zaragoza was relegated to Liga Adelante, while Levante remain playing in La Liga. This are the highlights of the referred match:
Regarding the subject, both teams have released statements through their websites, denying their involvement in such an action:
"Following the recent information regarding our team's match against Levante in 2011, Club Real Zaragoza denies being aware of any suspicious circumstance linked to that game. Club officials are willing to cooperate with any authority that requires our participation on the matter," can be read on the team's website.
This is not the first time a match involving Levante is under suspicion. In May of 2013, La Liga opened an investigation regarding the match between Deportivo La Coruña and Levante, which ended with a 4-0 victory for "El Depor".
Match-fixing is considered a crime in Spain, and if prosecutors find evidence involving the team or any players, those involved could endure jail time. If the clubs are held responsible, then they could be banned from any official competition.
