The virus has hit the English top-flight, putting the season under jeopardy after wreaking havoc in Europe's other top leagues.

The Premier League is set to hold a crisis meeting after two important figures in the English top-flight tested positive for the coronavirus. They are Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Chelsea ace Callum Hudson-Odoi.

It remains unclear how these two contracted the virus but their respective clubs have confirmed that they have caught the COVID-19. The Chelsea youngster becomes the first English top-flight player to contract the disease while the Gunners tactician is the first coach.

Arsenal’s weekend clash with Brighton has, as a result, been postponed. The Spanish gaffer is now under self-isolation, as well as the players, as they came in contact with the boss during training prior to testing positive.

Both clubs have shut down their training facility but a decision is yet to be made about Chelsea’s weekend clash with Aston Villa. All finger point to a postponement, but the fate of this season is what is set to be discussed.

“In light of Arsenal's announcement tonight confirming that their first-team coach Mikel Arteta has tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures,” a statement from the Premier League.

“The Premier League will make no further comment until after that meeting.”

That meeting will take place on Friday and it will involve all the 20 clubs. Postponement looks to be the likely outcome given that most of Europe has opted to suspend their leagues.

This comes after the UK government gave the English top-flight the green light to carry on despite calls for the competition to be put on hold. It looks more and more likely that football, as a whole, will come to a complete stop for the meanwhile as the world combats the spread of coronavirus.
