The Special One argued that his side has not spent enough to keep up with Man City in the title race, sparking an excellent response from Wenger.

On Tuesday, Man United saw the Premier League race slip further from reach as they drew 2-2 at home to Burnley. Despite playing at Old Trafford, the Red Devils went 2-0 down and only managed a point thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer from Lingard.

After the game, Jose Mourinho made an astonishing claim as to why his team is struggling to keep up with runaway leader Man City. The Portuguese boss argued that he has not been handed enough cash to splash in order to challenge for the league.

This is an odd remark by the Special One since he has spent $402m in the transfer market in the 18 months he has been in charge of the Red Devils. Jose’s claim thus sparked a response from Arsene Wenger, a manager who worked under huge financial constraints for a substantial period of his time in England.

“I have been in that position for 21 years so I will not start to complain now,’ Wenger said (as per the Telegraph) after being asked for his thoughts by a reporter.

“I have always had one team at least – sometimes four – who were richer than I was, so I learned to cope with that and deal with that.

“What is most important is that you deal with your own situation as well as you can and, yes, Manchester City are richer than us and, yes, Chelsea is richer than us and, yes, Manchester United are richer than us. But I still believe we have to find a way to be successful.”

Wenger’s side was forced to be smart and frugal in transfer windows due to the huge debt of the Emirates Stadium that needed to be paid off. That weight is no longer on the Gunners’ shoulders, but the north London club still does not have the financial power to break transfer records and compete financially with the Manchester giants.

Mourinho’s recent claim probably is not on Wenger’s mind right now, as his team gears up for a tricky away test. A day after Man City locks horns with Newcastle, Arsenal will travel to Crystal Palace in search of three points.
