Having finished second in a group that contained fellow World Cup winners Spain, the Azzurri were always at risk due to the natural trickiness of a two-legged play-off. Following a loss in Sweden in a game that they largely dominated but were unable to find a breakthrough against a dogged opponent, they now find themselves in a rather precarious position, although the objective is quite simple.
Win, or stay at home. Gian Piero Ventura was slammed by the Italian media for his lack of overall tactical nous and has many wondering as to why the ex-Torino boss was appointed coach of the Azzurri in the first place.
In any case, the hosts will have to make do without midfielder Marco Verratti. The PSG man, who is prone to picking up yellows, earned himself yet another one and thus misses this key match due to suspension. Meanwhile, although star defender Leonardo Bonucci suffered a fractured nose during the physical clash with Sweden, he's set to feature nonetheless while wearing a facial mask.
As for Sweden, they are firmly in the driver's seat after their narrow 1-0 win and could simply come and park the proverbial bus. Of course, a goal at the Stadio San Siro would effectively seal a spot at next year's tournament for the Blågult, who are in their second straight World Cup play-off. This time around, they may not have the talismanic attacker within their ranks, but they are perhaps stronger as a collective and are just 90 minutes away from featuring on the world's biggest footballing stage next year.
