Preview
A lot is at stake in this World Cup qualifier. Serbia (18 points) currently tops Group D by a single point, with Wales (17) and Republic of Ireland (16) coming in at second and third respectively. Both The Dragons and The Boys in Green can finish in first, but that is unlike since the leaders face an easy clash with Moldova on the final day.
As a result, Monday’s Cardiff City Stadium clash will be the playoff decider. Chris Coleman’s crew need a draw or a win to earn a playoff and keep their 2018 World Cup hopes alive. Defeat, however, will see Aaron Ramsey and Co. watch the tournament in Russia from home.
History does not back the hosts. Wales have not beaten their opponents at home since September 1979 in Swansea. The Dragons have also not beaten Republic of Ireland for 25 years, last winning 1-0 in a friendly in Dublin.
If there was ever a time Wales needed superstar Gareth Bale, this is it – he was omitted from the squad due to injury. Nonetheless, both sides will give it their all for the win regardless of the stats.
