On Saturday, Arsene Wenger will lead Arsenal onto the pitch for the FA Cup final – a tie which could be his last game as Arsenal boss. The Frenchman knows the importance of winning: after their disappointing season, silverware could calm the anger of their supporters.
Not only does Le Prof face Premier League champions Chelsea, his total record in finals is enough to make even the most optimistic fan skeptical. This will be the north London outfit’s 12th final under Wenger, meaning the Frenchman has 11 finals under his belt.
Of those 11 finals, the Gunners have won only six times under Arsene. There have been several heartbreaks for Gooners, namely the Champions League loss to Barca and the shock League Cup defeat to Birmingham.
However, Wenger’s record isn’t all bad news. His numbers in FA Cup finals is one to admire, having lost only once in seven appearances. That sole defeat came at the hands of Liverpool, losing 2-1 in 2001.
Since that loss, Arsenal have won five FA Cup finals in as many appearances. There was a memorable 2-0 victory over Chelsea in 2002, a hard-fought triumph over Man United on penalties in 2005, and a sensational comeback against Hull City in 2014.
Wenger’s record in finals is mixed, leaving the fans with nothing but unease for Saturday’s Wembley clash.
