If you watched the Real Madrid vs Sporting Gijon La Liga match earlier today, you must have noticed something unusual – the home players wore faded shirts. Many football fans took to social media trying to find answers regarding this rare scenario that made the Fly Emirates brand barely visible, but there is an explanation for this. In fact, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich wore similar shirts earlier this season.

Upon realizing the confusion among fans regarding the new kits, Real Madrid released a statement on their official website explaining the scenario. Here are some of the tweets from fans:
anybody know why @realmadrid played without a badge, sponsor or kit maker on the front of their shirt today? #LaLiga #RealMadrid

And then, the 11-time European champions responded with this statement:
''The game against Sporting de Gijón saw the Real Madrid players wear special shirts made from plastics gathered from coastal areas in the Maldives and containing environmentally friendly materials, as the club offered their backing to an invitiate which bids to save the oceans.
''Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in the oceans, which places our ecosystem and, ultimately, our living environment in serious danger. In April 2015, Adidas joined forces with Parley for the Oceans, an environmental organisation and a collaborative network which seeks to raise awareness about the beauty and fragile nature of our oceans and rolls out comprehensive strategies to bring an end to their destruction.’’
Well, now you know! It is such an honorable gesture by the European champions. Los Blancos won the match 2-1 thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's record-setting brace.
