Barcelona fans worried over the situation of star attacker Lionel Messi may not be put to ease, as a report courtesy of Marca has emerged claiming that the Argentine rejected a contract renewal.
The Blaugrana are keen on extending his current deal, which runs out in two years’ time. However, when handed a new offer, the Argentine merely turned it down. One huge factor is believed to be his tax evasion problems.
The contract was tabled in July whilst La Pulga was on holiday. The player did not communicate his decision directly to the club, but the news was conveyed to president Josep Maria Bartomeu through the player’s father – also his agent.
Bartomeu was left shocked by the rejection, but the Catalan giants won’t give up hope. The Spanish Primera Division champions are expected to return to the negotiating table, but uncertainty remains over Leo’s desire to stay.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, according to Marca, is determined to fulfill his Camp Nou contract, meaning an exit will not happen until the summer of 2018. What will come afterwards is a mystery.
Man City, Chelsea, Man United, and PSG are clubs that have been linked with Messi before. However, with Barca tying down Neymar – five years Messi’s junior and thus the future of the Blaugrana – with a new deal until 2021, they will work hard on making sure Leo continues to partner the Brazilian.
