La Tricolor has shocked CONMEBOL in their most recent games, becoming a powerful force and in result, the leader of the 2018 South American World Cup Qualifiers group. Their balanced style of play, which benefits from some of their players’ speed, came like a breath of fresh air for the South American qualifiers. Ecuador now faces the challenge of taking home the Copa América trophy for the first time.

The yellow-and-blue side has played 27 editions of the Copa América, bringing not-so-satisfying results for their supporters. La Tricolor has only been able to make it to the knockout stages of the tournament two times, back in 1993, when they hosted the competition, and in 1997. Ecuador’s best result in the tournament came while hosting it, finishing fourth after being shocked by debutant Mexico in the semi-finals. During last year’s Copa América in Chile, Ecuador wasn’t able to make it to the quarter finals, after finishing third in Group A, which had Chile and Bolivia earning their ticket to the knockout stage.

Following their early exit from the South American tournament, Ecuador have proven that this generation could earn them a spot in the 2018 World Cup. Gustavo Quinteros’ side leads the WC Qualifiers with 13 points, defeating teams such as Argentina and Uruguay in the process. Despite having only played six games, it would be shocking to see La Tricolor missing out on one of the 4.5 spots available for CONMEBOL teams. They are quite on a roll!

The Argentinean-born coach likes a balanced style of play, using quick players down the flanks with only one striker up front. Quinteros’ approach on the game Is usually fueled by his defensive knowledge, having played as a center back most of his career. His goal is to allow as few goals as possible, guiding his teams to win by tight scores most of the time.
The former Bolivian National Team coach has been in charge of La Tricolor since January 2015.

La Tricolor will have to make do without one of their most famous players due to injury. Striker Felipe Caicedo will not be able to play for Ecuador after struggling all season long with a right thigh problem. Without the tall Espanyol player, Ecuador’s offense will rely on West Ham’s Enner Valencia, Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia, and Michael Arroyo and Fidel Martinez, both of them playing for Liga MX sides.
