As in seasons past, BVB look destined to lose one of their key assets to rivals Bayern Munich, as club captain Mats Hummels has handed in a transfer request to his current employers with the aim of making an Allianz Arena switch.
Rumors spread earlier this month that die Roten had begun negotiations for the German center-back, as fans quickly expressed their anger at their 27-year-old skipper, holding a “The captain is leaving the ship. The sooner the better” banner in the recent 5-1 win over Wolfsburg.
However, as revealed by Hans-Joachim Watzke in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung (as per Bild), the World Cup winner’s dream switch to the Bavarians may not go down as easily as expected.
As written in the German newspaper, the BVB CEO admitted that his side will not budge on the asking price, with Watzke making it crystal clear that the reigning Bundesliga champions will miss out on Hummels otherwise.
“We have set a transfer fee, which is non-negotiable. Either it’s 100% paid, or the transfer will not take place,” said the BVB CEO.
Hummels, who has racked up 28 appearances in the domestic league this campaign, has been an instrumental figure at Signal Iduna Park since joining back in 2008 on loan.
Facing the prospect of following in the footsteps of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski, Mats could leave BVB for Bayern, but only if his believed €35m-40m price tag is met.
