After a six-month hiatus, the qualification process for the 2017 AFCON tournament gets underway this month as 51 teams all battle for a chance to participate in next year's big event, hosted by Gabon. Some teams, like Ghana, are cruising along nicely and are on their way to seal their spot in the upcoming tournament. Others, like Mozambique, are hoping for their first win, as they hope to keep their qualifying ambitions viable.

Avram Grant has been receiving quite a bit of criticism from former football officials, fans, and the general press due to his perceived lack of involvement - specifically the amount of time he spends in the country - with the team during the off-season. However, the Israeli tactician's side will be coming into their third qualifying clash having picked up six points out of six, and are by far their quartet's highest scoring side with eight netted and just one conceded.

Grant has made some changes to the team ahead of their upcoming match with Mozambique, which takes place at the famed Accra Sports Stadium this Thursday. For starters, David Accam, who scored the last of the seven goals for the Black Stars in their 7-1 mauling of Mauritius last year, will play no part due to an injury. Goalkeeper Fatau Dauda, who had previously enjoyed a pretty much guaranteed spot, has been dropped, whilst Adam Kwarasey - who had spent quite a bit in the international wilderness after the 2014 World Cup - has been recalled as a result of his solid performances with MLS side Portland Timbers.

Coming into this match, the Black Stars are unbeaten in their last eight matches, with their last loss taking place on May 27, 2015 when they were defeated 3-0 in a friendly match against Zambia. This meeting will be the first between Ghana and Mozambique since January 24, 1999, in which Ghana edged them out 1-0 in an AFCON match.

So far, the two sides have met four times - two in friendlies, and two in AFCON competition - and the Black Stars have yet to lose, with three wins and one draw to date.

Mozambique

Meanwhile, Mozambique, who have never qualified for a World Cup, are hoping to earn a spot at in the AFCON for the first time since 2010. In the country's entire history, they have only featured in the continent's famed competition four times, and have never gotten past the first round. Currently bottom of the table with two losses so far, the Mambas will be attempting to stage an upset in beating Ghana for the first time this Thursday.

However, things do not look good for Abel Xavier's side, who will be hoping to score their first goal after being shut out by Rwanda and Mauritius - both of whom Ghana defeated already - in their first two matches.
