Despite winning the fixture 2-0 courtesy of goals from Marco Reus and Shinji Kagawa, a sombre mood engulfed the crowded stadium as fans paid their last respects to their departed comrade.
The news of the fan’s death made rounds across the stadium in the first half of the highly-attended fixture. As a result, the entire 81,000 capacity stadium went silent to honor the departed fan. Coincidentally, or as bizarre as it may sound, there were reports that another fan had a heart attack in the second half, but was later confirmed to be in a stable condition.
At the end of the game, the fans sang a sad rendition of ''You’ll Never Walk Alone’’ as the mood in the stadium quickly switched from jovial to sombre.
You could almost hear a pin drop at the Signal Iduna Park when the fans first realized that one of their own had passed on.
