Two teams with the credentials to beat top-caliber sides will face each other for a place in the Europa League Quarter finals. Check out our preview for the first leg of the series between Villarreal and Bayer Leverkusen.

Every fan watching the Europa League is paying attention to the game between Manchester United and Liverpool, but the clash between Villarreal and Bayer Leverkusen should be considered as one of the most interesting in the tournament's Round of 16.

The Yellow Submarine eliminated Serie A contenders Napoli to get to this stage, while Bayer Leverkusen managed to oust Primeira Liga's Sporting Lisbon with a top caliber display. All things considered, fans watching this game should expect quite a treat, as Villarreal is still fighting for the third spot in La Liga, while Die Werkself have shown they have what it takes to take on tough opponents like Barcelona or even Bayern Munich.

Marcelino García Toral's crew saw a 14-game unbeaten streak snapped from them last weekend, as they were unable to defeat Las Palmas in La Liga. The Valencia-based team will have to rely on Roberto Soldado's skills up front, taking under consideration that Mateo Musacchio, Jaume Costa and midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos will not be able to play due to different injuries.

Last weekend's match was an ego boost for Bayer Leverkusen. Roger Schmidt's crew ended a three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind draw against Augsburg. The Aspirins were down three-nil with just 30 minutes left in the game, and they managed to come back even with an injury-depleted side. For this game, Schmidt will have Omer Toprak, Jonathan Tah and Stefan Kiessling back after recovering from their respective injuries, while Mexican striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernández is also expected to perform up front as the team's top scorer in all competitions.

Head to head

This will be the third meeting between these teams in the Europa League, and Villarreal will try to build on their experience to defeat the German side once again. Back in the 2010-2011 season, The Yellow Submarine won both games of their series against Bayer Leverkusen, making the most out of their visit to BayArena (3-2) and sealing the deal at home (2-1).
