Thanks to the original execution of Adubarey's penalty, Maldives clinched the third place at the AFC Challenge Cup over Afghanistan.

Afghanistan and the Maldives clashed today to earn a spot on the podium of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup. After 90 minutes the score was still tied at 0-0.

Extra-time also failed to provide a result, as each team scored one, forcing the teams into a penalty shootout. Incredibly, even the first five penalties could not determine a winner, thus the two countries proceeded to sudden death penalty shootouts.

The Maldivian player trips himself to cause a distraction

As the Maldives go to shoot their seventh penalty, Ashad Ali Adubarey executes a strange routine, delivering the goal. As the Maldivian player approached the spot, he tripped himself in an attempt to distract the keeper, got right back onto his feet and placed the ball in the top corner.

The Afghan players protested the move, but the referee allowed it as he found no illegality in the controversial run. Eventually, the Maldives went on to win the game with an aggregate result of 9-8, securing the third place.
