Arsene Wenger needs to spend heavily this summer. Especially with Tottenham, Man City, Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea all ready to splash the cash ahead of next season.

Same old tale. Arsenal's season went from hero to zero in a split second and who would have imagined Arsene Wenger having to wonder what went wrong when his team were looking solid for silverware on all fronts. An epic tale of tragic and disaster has been repeated again as far as the Gunners are concerned.

And of all person, Wenger's distraught looks on the sidelines never made any positive impact in motivating the demotivated players. But of course, he was indeed brimming with his evergreen sense of optimism that has never failed to depart from his inner soul ever since he arrived 15 years ago. What a long period of time? Doesn't seem that long when compared to their inability to win silverware for the past seven years.

But if there's one thing that ended up on the bright note when last season drew it's closure, Wenger has indeed been warned now. He saw it with his naked eyes. When Sir Alex famously hailed City as the noisy neighbours ages ago, i doubt he would have meant the noise and havoc they are creating now. The Arabians have achieved their mission. City are indeed more than just a plain threat now. Not only that, a certain King Kenny has weaved his magic within the holy grounds of Anfield while a Spurs team full of misfit strikers have already announced their decision to withdraw some cash this summer. A wake-up call for Wenger? Too obvious in my opinion as Live Soccer TV provides a simple list of five players Wenger has to sign in order to keep up with the pace at the top of the Premier League bigshots.

1. GARY CAHILL

Cahill is English. Does that make him special as far as Wenger is concerned? I don't think so. He's special because he is a central defender. A better defender than Squillachi to be frank. Well, too many years have past with constant shout outs for Wenger to sign a new goalkeeper but with Szczesny on board,  i do not think that is needed. Vermalaen's long term absence last season saw Koscielny being tormented with extra pressure of having to play alongside two unconvincing defenders.

Yes, i do mean Djourou too. It was all too apparent during the England-Switzerland clash at Wembley. Cahill would fit the bill or perhaps has to be fitted into the bill because trust me, Djourou and Squillachi ain't going to win them any titles. Vermalaen is expected to be back and will certainly line-up alongside Koscielny. Cahill will definitely be a perfect back-up to those two. Remember, you can play total football all you want, but if you do not have the guts of Puyol and the persistence of Pique at the back, nothing else matters.

2. CHARLIE ADAM

Remember Patrick Viera? Remember Robert Pires? Remember Freddie Ljungberg? Well, experience does make a difference. Probably Wenger might get that point this summer. And if he does, Charlie Adam is the ideal target. Charlie Adam's name might sound rather inferior compared to the other players being linked with a move to Emirates but his monumental abilities attributed to Blackpool's Herculean effort in the Premier League last season.

His abilities are undoubtedly suited for top class teams, justified by January bids from Liverpool and Spurs. If there's one player to add that simple spice of experience and grit into Arsenal's ever-exquisite midfield line-up, Adam is certainly the man. With Denilson also set for a bitter-end to his tenure with Arsenal, perhaps, Blackpool's downfall could be Arsenal's gain.

3. CHARLES N'ZOGBIA

When you have a striker like Maruoane Chamakh, what do you need to do? Fundamental football: Get crosses into the box. But frankly speaking, Theo Walcott isn't the best at providing those deadly 'Beckham' like balls. I have constantly repeated this because i certainly feel that Walcott looks a better threat when played as a forward down the middle. Samir Nasri has been providing magical balls all-season long on the left flank and N'Zogbia would almost instantly fit into those roles on the right hand side.

However, the Gunners will face competition from Liverpool and Spurs for the signature of the want-away Wigan Athletic talisman. A £15 million bid could seal the deal and the Gunners will very much have  a fresher threat down that right flank.
