About Liga de Futbol

Liga de Futbol History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Bolivian Primera División is the top level of professional football in Bolivia. It was founded in 1950, and up until 2017, was known as the Liga de Fútbol Profesional Boliviano (Bolivian Professional Football League).

Bolívar by far is the most successful club in Bolivian Primera División history, with more titles won than any other side. Other teams to have also won multiple titles include The Strongest and Jorge Wilstermann.

Depending on how a team performs during each season, it can qualify for international competition, namely the Copa Libertadores or the Copa Sudamericana. Teams in the Bolivian Primera División also take part in the domestic Copa Bolivia as well as the Copa de la División Profesional.

Like many other leagues in South America and elsewhere, the Bolivian Primera División operates on a relegation-promotion system. The worst-performing team is relegated to the Copa Simón Bolívar, while the team finishing in the penultimate spot in the league table has a chance to fight for its spot in the top flight in a relegation play-off against the runners-up from the Copa Simón Bolívar.

Meda rights to the Bolivian Primera División in Bolivia have been largely under the umbrella of commercial TV provider Tigo Sports since the turn of the 21st century. In the early 2020s, Tigo Sports successfully acquired exclusive TV and live-streaming rights for the Bolivian Primera División in a multi-year deal; prior to this, Tigo Sports and Unitel held joint-broadcast rights from around 2017 to 2022.
