More on Premier Sports
Premier Sports is pay-TV sports network available in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. It launched back in 2009 after the termination of Setanta Sports GB. It is owned by Premier Media Broadcasting Ltd., who also runs the channel FreeSports in the UK. Over the years, Premier Sports has moved away from its strong reliance on Setanta Sports in Ireland—now eir Sport—to become an independent broadcaster with access to major football tournaments.
Its history of comprehensive football coverage includes the live telecast of matches from competitions all over the world, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the United States’ Major League Soccer. It has also been successful in securing deals in South America over the years to air games from the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, as well as the Copa America.
The acquisition of Premier Sports by the Viaplay Group in 2022 resulted in the rebranding of its channels to Viaplay Sports by November of the same year. Subsequently, a buyout in November 2023 allowed Premier Sports to revert to its original name by April 2024. Despite these changes, the broadcaster successfully held onto its comprehensive rights to broadcast significant sports competitions, including the UEFA Euro qualifiers, NHL, Nascar, the Scottish Cup, Spanish LaLiga, and the URC.
