About Mediaset
Mediaset is a commercial broadcaster in Italy, which was founded by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in December 1993. It operates free-to-air and pay-television television channels and radio stations. For many years, it has been a competitor to public-service broadcaster RAI and satellite TV platform Sky Italia. Its offerings include terrestrial TV channels like Canale 5, Italia 1, and Rete 4, which are available in high definition. Programming from some of these channels may distributed worldwide via the broadcaster’s international service Mediaset Italia.
Over the years, a number of services and offerings from Mediaset have been shut down. In January 2005, Mediaset Premium was launched to serve as a DTT and VOD provider. Its packages included cartoons, documentaries, movies, TV series and access to Premium Play—an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service. Mediaset Premium also came with comprehensive sports coverage from major football competitions such as the UEFA Champions League on themed channels like Premium Sports and Premium Calcio. However, in June 2019, amid a financial crisis, the service shut down.
Mediaset’s local networks may be accessible in other European countries like Albania, Croatia, France, Greece, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland. Mediaset also partly owns Spanish media company Mediaset España Comunicación.
