About
ESPN Classic USA history, coverage, features
ESPN Classic is a pay-TV sports channel in USA, operated by ESPN Inc. It was launched in 1995 under the name Classic Sports Network, before being purchased by the ESPN company two years later for a reported fee of $175 million. It broadcasts in standard definition (480i) and is related to other ESPN assets, including the flagship ESPN channel, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPNU and ESPN Deportes.
As its name suggests, the network focuses on historical sports events through documentaries, game replays and sports films. Since 2014, many U.S. TV providers carrying ESPN Classic on their platform have been dropping the channel from their lineups and adopting it as a video on demand (VOD) service instead. ESPN Classic’s converted service first replaced the linear channel on DISH Network in America in October 2014, thus making hundreds of hours of archived programming, including classic college football and basketball games, legendary boxing fights and more available to subscribers, on demand.
ESPN Classic’s VOD content later on made it to WatchESPN—the OTT platform previously responsible for the digital mirroring of all linear ESPN television networks in USA, which got discontinued in 2019. ESPN Classic is available to watch in USA on AT&T U-verse (Channel 603) and DirecTV (Channel 614). Viewers may also be able to access ESPN Classic through various cable TV providers nationwide; however, exact channel numbers on each carrier may vary based on the location.
