About
ABC history, coverage, features
ABC is an Australian public television channel. It was launched on November 5, 1956 as ABC National Television, but it was later rebranded as ABC1 in 2008. The channel’s name would be changed once more on July 28, 2014 to ABC, as it is currently known.
ABC’s vast history as one of the most watched television channels in Australia saw it becoming one of the first to embrace color TV on its programming. Current affairs shows and music shows that featured the so called “rock revolution” were among the highlights of this channel.
ABC is required to air news and current affairs shows as the cornerstone of its programming, but it has also aired documentaries, drama programs, variety shows, comedies, and sports shows.
Speaking about sports, ABC has held broadcasting rights for the Women’s Australian Open, the W-League, the Women’s National Basketball League, the Women’s Asian Cup, the Rugby League, Australian football rules, and the Australian Rugby Championship. ABC has also owned broadcasting rights to the Paralympic Games.
An HD feed for this channel was launched on January 1, 2008. Nevertheless, the feed was shut down in 2010, with its space being used by the ABC News channel. Eventually, the feed would return to the air on December 6, 2016 localized to each state, and only downscaling its content to SD when a news broadcast was aired. ABC’s SD and HD feeds are available on Australia’s terrestrial TV feed and on pay-tv carriers across the country. Check their availability on your region.
