About

NPO 2 History, Coverage, Features

NPO 2 is a Dutch public television channel owned and operated by the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep, or NPO. It was launched on October 1, 1964, as Nederland 2, a name that would stick until 1990, when it was rebranded to TV2. The rebranding was unsuccessful, and the channel returned to its original name in the year 2000, and it would eventually be labeled as NPO 2, in an attempt by its parent company to make its programming more recognizable.

Over the years, NPO 2 has been categorized as a non-mainstream entertainment channel. Shows aired on this channel have covered topics such as religion, culture, current affairs, and repeat broadcasts for some of the shows aired earlier in the week by any of its two sister channels.

Speaking about sports, NPO 2 has been used as an overflow channel when a big event is taking place, such as the Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup. Contrary to popular belief, NPO 2’s contribution to such coverage has consisted of making space for all news shows regularly aired on NPO 1, so that the sister channel can cover the aforementioned events properly.

NPO 2 started airing its content in Standard Definition, but a High-Definition feed was first tested in 2008 and officially launched in 2009. Users who do not have access to HD technology might be able to watch this channel via a downscaled version of the HD feed.
