About
L'Equipe history, coverage, features
L’Equipe is a French sports television channel owned and operated by the Amaury Group. It is often referred to as the television version of the well-known French sports newspaper. It was launched in 1998 under the name L’Equipe TV, but it would later be rebranded to L’Equipe 21 in 2012. That change of name did not last, as the group rebranded the channel simply as L’Equipe four years later, forcing fans and experts to refer to the channel as La Chaine L’Equipe, in order to distinguish it from the newspaper.
Over the years, L’Equipe has made a name for itself for its live broadcast of sports events. The channel has been in charge of covering disciplines such as football, basketball, handball, cycling, volleyball, beach volleyball, tennis, biathlon, ice hockey, combat sports such as boxing, judo, kick boxing and sumo, rugby, motorsports, and e-sports.
The channel has also covered sports awards ceremonies such as the Ballon D’Or. In fact, two of those ceremonies are among the most watched shows in the channel’s history.
Speaking about football, L’Equipe has covered domestic competitions such as the DFB Pokal, the Spanish Copa del Rey, the Coppa Italia, the Taca da Portugal, and friendly competitions such as the Joan Gamper trophy and the Santiago Bernabeu trophy. When it comes to international football, the channel has aired games for the UEFA Nations League, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, UEFA Euro qualifiers, and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, to name a few.
L’Equipe was launched as a Standard Definition (SD) channel in 1998, but the channel was able to add an HD feed to its broadcasts in 2012. Both feeds for this channel are still available in different territories.
