The action in Group C will open with Uruguay vs Peru before Chile and Mexico lock horns in the section’s other game.
It’s almost a disaster for Peru. They are going into their match against Uruguay with a weak squad. It’s actually the result of injuries.

No Claudio Pizarro, no Jefferson Farfan. These 2 injured key players have been excluded from Peru’s roster. Vargas, meanwhile, is yet to confirm his presence against Uruguay.

“I want to be there on Monday,” said the player according to USA Today.

“But if I can’t play, then I want to accompany my team mates at least.”

However, coach Markarian doesn’t want his confidence to suffer under the influence of fear. The Peru manager was quoted as saying:

“The spirit in the changing room is good. The players are good. They do not need anyone to give them a lift. They are very strong and they are fired up and ready to play.”

In fact, Peru have succeeded in reaching the quarter-finals of the Copa America in each of the last 4 editions. In 2007, the Peruvians even ranked above Uruguay in Group A as they recorded a shocking 3-0 victory against La Celeste Olimpica in their opening game. Coincidentally, Peru will be up against Uruguay one more time to open their tournament’s campaign.

But things seem to have changed, especially for the Uruguayans. Since their feat at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Uruguay look to have found more respect and football analysts have now tipped them as strong challengers for the 2011 Copa America title.

Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan, Diego Lugano… these guys are expected to be on fire against Peru. Will La Blanquirroja offer Uruguay a walk in the park on Monday?
