About Campeonato Paraibano

The Campeonato Paraibano, also known as Campeonato Paraibano de Futebol da Primeira Divisao, is a soccer tournament for teams from the Brazilian region of Paraíba. The competition is held between January and April, to make way for its teams to play national competitions. It was created in 1908 and has also been rebranded after sponsors that have contributed to the league’s development.
Due to the changing number of teams involved in the tournament, the format of the competition has been updated over the years. The current format welcomes ten teams to its top-flight, playing a single round-robin between all clubs. The top four teams after nine matches proceed to the playoffs, while the two teams with the lowest number of points are relegated to the Second Division.
Once in the playoffs, both ties are played on a home-and-away basis, with the highest-ranked team hosting the return leg. The same is used for the final series, where extra time and penalties are used to determine the winner if the aggregate is level. Added to the title, the winner and the runners-up qualify to the Copa do Brasil, and the champions also get a spot to play in the Copa do Nordeste.
There have been many successful teams in this competition, but one that has stood out the most is Botafogo-PB. This team, which must not be confused with Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas from Rio de Janeiro, has managed to win 30 league titles.
