About Tercera Federación

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Tercera Federación category, initially under the name Tercera RFEF, is the fifth football competition in the Spanish league system. The league is under La Liga, la Segunda División, la Primera Federación, and the Segunda Federación. It was founded in 1929 as the Tercera División, but the Royal Spanish Football Federation rearranged its leagues in 1977, making this the fourth most relevant división. The Spanish Federation performed a similar restructuring in 2021, forcing this category to be dropped to the fifth step in the Spanish football ladder.

The Tercera Federación comprises eighteen regional leagues, a format from one of its predecessors. The teams are involved in a regional league determined by the Spanish Community they belong to. The only exception is the Andalusian región, which has two regional leagues given its size. All competitions unfold like in the upper categories, with all teams in each league playing against each other twice, and each season starting in August and ending in late May.

When the competition ends, the team that ends in the first place gets promoted to the Segunda Federación, meaning there are eighteen directly promoted teams each season. The only exception to this rule is the reserve teams, who may not be allowed to earn promotion if their parent club is involved in the league they are about to be promoted into.

There are nine extra tickets for the Segunda Federación via a promotion playoff contested by the top four teams in each region. All playoff ties are held on a two-leg format, and once eighteen teams are left, the nine winners of those ties get promoted to the upper category.

Like other Spanish football leagues, the Tercera Federación is forced to relegate some of its teams. Each group relegates up to four teams every season. However, the number may change, given the number of teams involved in each tournament.
