History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The President of Ireland's Cup, also known as the President’s Cup, is the Republic of Ireland’s annual Super Cup. Established in 2014, it serves as the traditional season opener for the nation’s domestic league.
In line with other European Super Cups, this competition is a one-off match contested between the League of Ireland Premier Division champion and the FAI Cup winner. If one team wins both the league and cup, the Premier Division runner-up is invited to compete in the President’s Cup.
Held in February or March, this event is organized by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI). Unlike many other countries, the Republic of Ireland’s Super Cup takes place at the home ground of one of the participating clubs, rather than in the national stadium, Aviva Stadium.
St Patrick's Athletic won the inaugural President’s Cup by defeating Sligo Rovers 1-0 in 2014. Although they returned the following year, they could not defend their title and lost to Dundalk. Dundalk's victory was followed by Cork City, who made history by becoming the first club to lift back-to-back Super Cup titles and three consecutive trophies between 2016 and 2018.
