About CONCACAF W Championship
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The CONCACAF W Championship is a regional women’s soccer tournament for member countries of the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). Founded in 1991 as the CONCACAF Women's Championship, it was briefly known as the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup from 2000 to 2006 before adopting its current name in 2022. Organized by CONCACAF, the tournament also serves as a qualifier for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and often the Summer Olympics.
The CONCACAF W Championship typically takes place in the summer or fall and is currently held every four years, following a history of inconsistent scheduling. Eight countries compete for the title, with six participants determined through a qualifying campaign, while the two highest-ranked CONCACAF women’s national teams receive a bye. Non-CONCACAF sides have been invited when the tournament was held outside the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying cycle
Previously featuring a group stage, the tournament adopted a five-round knockout format for the 2026 edition. The top four teams (the four semifinalists) qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, while a play-in among the quarterfinal losers decides which two countries will represent CONCACAF in the inter-confederation playoffs. The two finalists qualify for the Olympics unless one of the finalists is the host nation, in which case the third-placed team receives the spot.
The USWNT has dominated the competition, winning the inaugural title in 1991 with a 5-0 victory over Canada and securing all but two of the subsequent ten tournaments. Canada ended the USWNT's reign by winning the trophy in 1998 and 2010.
