About Supercopa do Brasil
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Supercopa do Brasil is an association football competition organized by the Confederation of Brazilian Football (CBF). It was launched during the early 1990s and was played for two years before being paused for eighteen years. The competition was brought back in 2020, although the first editions are considered unofficial by most experts. Since the 2024 edition, the Supercopa do Brasil is also known as Supercopa Rei as a tribute to the late Pelé.
The current format of the competition sees the winner of the most recent Brasileirão facing the Copa do Brasil winners. In the event of the same team winning both competitions, the runners-up from the Brasileirão will be invited to play. The competition is a single-match final at a neutral venue. The venue Mané Garrincha Arena in Brasilia has recently been selected on several occaions as a preferred location.
Flamengo is the most successful club in the competition history. Palmeiras, Atlético Mineiro, and São Paulo are some of the other teams that have been been successful in winning the competition.
The Supercopa do Brasil became one of the first competitions to be played behind closed doors in South America during the COVID-19 pandemic. This took place in 2021, when Flamengo defeated Palmeiras after penalties to win their second Supercopa title in a row.
