Sejarah, format, organisasi, dan liputan media A-League

A-League Australia, atau A-League Men, adalah kategori tertinggi sepak bola asosiasi di Australia. Liga ini dibentuk pada tahun 2004, dengan musim pertamanya dimulai pada 2005. A-League menggantikan National Soccer League yang sudah tidak ada dan beroperasi di bawah naungan Australian Professional Leagues.

Selama bertahun-tahun, A-League telah mencakup tim dari Australia dan Selandia Baru, dengan format yang berubah seiring waktu tergantung pada jumlah tim yang terlibat dalam turnamen. Musim pertama dimainkan oleh delapan tim, namun kini A-League diikuti oleh 12 klub, sebelas dari Australia dan satu dari Selandia Baru. Berbeda dengan kebanyakan liga di dunia, A-League tidak menerapkan sistem promosi atau degradasi antar musim.

Karena kondisi cuaca ekstrem, A-League biasanya dimainkan antara Oktober hingga Mei tahun berikutnya, dengan semua tim memainkan hingga 26 pertandingan. Enam tim terbaik liga memasuki tahap pasca-musim, di mana dua tim teratas mendapatkan bye dan empat klub lainnya terlibat dalam babak eliminasi satu pertandingan. Semifinal dimainkan dengan format kandang-tandang, sementara pertandingan final diadakan di tempat yang dipilih oleh Australian Professional Leagues.

A-League juga memberikan akses ke kompetisi kontinental setelah setiap musim berakhir. Turnamen ini memberikan tempat untuk AFC Champions League dan AFC Cup.

Di masa lalu, pertandingan langsung A-League telah ditayangkan di jaringan dan layanan besar, termasuk Network 10 dan Paramount+, yang memiliki hak streaming untuk kompetisi ini.
