About USL League Two
USL League Two History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
USL League Two, formerly the Premier Development League (PDL), is a soccer league for amateur and semi-professional clubs from the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1995 and is operated by the United Soccer League (USL). However, it is not part of the top three divisions recognized by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
The league follows a spring-to-summer schedule, with the regular USL League Two season running from May to July and playoffs concluding in August. The number of participants reached over 100 by 2022, divided into four conferences: Eastern, Central, Southern, and Western. Each conference contains several divisions with varying team counts.
USL League Two clubs play 10-14 regular-season matches within their divisions, with the top one to three teams advancing to the playoffs, depending on division size. The USL League Two playoffs operate on a single-elimination basis, starting with the conference quarterfinals, then the semifinals and the final. The four conference champions reach the national semifinals, where the winners compete for the title in the USL League Two Championship Game.
Originally the Premier League, the competition became the Premier Development Soccer League (PDSL) in 1997, later dropping "Soccer" to become the USL Premier Development League (PDL) in 1999. In 2018, it rebranded as USL League Two. The mid-2000s was also a special period as an agreement with Fox Soccer Channel allowed live matches to be broadcast nationally for the first time.
Richmond Kickers won the inaugural USL League Two title in 1995, beating the San Francisco All-Blacks United. Central Coast Roadrunners made history by winning consecutive titles in 1996 and 1997, a feat later matched by the Chicago Sockers (1999 and 2000) and Cape Cod Crusaders (2002 and 2003). Meanwhile, the Flint City Bucks achieved significant success in the mid-to-late 2010s, securing three USL League Two championships from 2014 to 2019, with two titles earned under its previous name, the Michigan Bucks.
