About Ettan

The Swedish Division 1 (Ettan Fotboll Division 1) is the second division and the third level in the Swedish football league system. It was founded in 2006 and is run by the Swedish Football Federation.

The division operates on the relegation and promotion system. It consists of 32 teams divided into two separate leagues, Norra (Northern) and Södra (Southern). Each of the leagues has 16 clubs participating in it. All the teams play 30 matches in a season (15 at home and 15 away). A win attracts three points, and a draw is rewarded with a point.

At the end of a season, the club with the most points is crowned champions of the Swedish Division 1 league. The winners of the Nora and Södra leagues are automatically promoted to the Superettan - Sweden's first division football league. The second-placed sides in each of the two groups play a promotion/relegation play-off against the third and fourth lowest-ranked teams in Superettan.

Relatively, the three bottom-ranked clubs of the Nora and Södra leagues are relegated to Division 2. They are replaced by the six winning teams from the six Division 2 leagues.

Teams in the Swedish Division 1 league are eligible to play in the Svenska Cupen - the Swedish domestic knockout cup competition. Should the team win, it will qualify to feature in the UEFA Europa League.
