Supercopa de España Femenina History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Supercopa de España Femenina is an annual four-team tournament featuring Spanish Liga F teams. The competition was created in 1997 by the Royal Spanish Football Federation, where the league champions and the Copa de la Reina winners battled to bring this championship home. Despite initial efforts, the tournament went into a 19-year hiatus before the Spanish Federation resumed it, this time with a four-team format.
The tournament’s upgrade kept the winners of Liga F and the Copa de la Reina whilst also adding the runners-up from the cup competition and the highest-ranked team yet to make the competition based on sports merit.
All teams enter a draw held by the Spanish Football Federation, and once the matches are known, a neutral venue is elected to host all the matches. The competition is usually held in February, which helps teams present themselves in top form, as the games are played at the halfway point of the Liga F season.
Both semi-finals are played as one-leg ties, using extra time and penalties to determine the winner if the game remains drawn after 90 minutes. The semi-final fixtures are held 24 hours apart, and the title clash is usually scheduled three days after the second semi-final. The Supercopa de España Femenina final is played similarly, with extra time and penalties used to name a winner after regulation if the game remains level.
After the 19-year pause, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid were the first teams to secure trophies in the first few years of resumption. After five editions, Barcelona became the most successful team in the Supercopa de España Femenina.
